Iolite has a deep purplish color, and this has put it amongst some of the favored royal color of gemstones. The Antique cut simply means the classic cut and was common in the early 19th century. The cut is also called the Antique Cushion cut. The cushion part of the name is derived from the fact that the finished gem looks like the cushion of a seat; this means that, when looked at from above, it has a square shape, but the middle sections of the edges slightly bulge outwards. The antique cut Iolite should ideally have 64 facets, but these can be varied depending on the jeweler or customer. The antique cut us ideal for romantic jewelry since it has that innate ability to maximize the luster of a gemstone; it is equally classified with the princess cut just for this very characteristic. The cut was originally done on sapphires and rubies, but is equally great when done on Iolite.
